What are the characteristics of the study population of the GENEIDA cohort?
The GENEIDA cohort is located in the Poniente region (Almeria), in southeastern Spain. This is one of the most important areas with intensive agriculture at national and international level, with a large area devoted to the cultivation of horticultural products in greenhouses, as well as numerous industries related to the packaging and distribution of these products. This important agricultural activity has long involved the use of pesticides, mainly non-persistent pesticides, to control pests and obtain better crop yields. Although in recent years the use of integrated pest management techniques has allowed a more rational use of plant protection products, pesticides are still present in our study population. This fact, together with a population of great ethnic diversity, makes this area a privileged setting for the development of studies of these characteristics.
